Self Portrait
By Ava Gibson
They say don't judge a book by its cover
Yet covers are the first thing we discover
If you really read into me, you would see
The little things matter to me
I Love long deep conversations that spark big connections
My biggest soft spot is my connection with kids
While I may look grown
I'm still healing the inner child that had to be on her own
Being with children makes me the happiest known
I still struggle to not say yes when my brain is screaming no
I am a piece of a puzzle that is tragically beautiful but still unknown
They Constantly say I am the beauty standard, people tell me they want to look like me
But the only beauty that we see is physical, it's just surface beauty
I want to be looked past my cover and admired for more than what you see
Admired for the kindness and sympathy I give relentlessly to others
Because at last one day my cover will change and start to fade
And when my skin starts to wrinkle for my body will not look the same
But my heart of gold will forever remain that same with empathy that never fades
Because my care for others will always play a part in every chapter of my book
And I want the remembrance of my kindness to remain in people's brain like a hook
So when they close my book I'm remembered for more than my looks.
